허우 쩡첸 톈원 3호 임무 수석과학자는 최근 중국 CCTV와 인터뷰에서 “톈원 3호 임무는 기술적 난제를 극복하기 위한 노력을 쏟으며 순조롭게 진행되고 있다”고 밝혔다.
이어 “탐사 장비는 시제품 개발 단계에 진입했으며, 전국 각지의 많은 과학자 팀이 임무의 과학적 목표에 따라 난제를 해결하기 위해 협력하고 있다”고 덧붙였다.
반면 미국 항공우주국(NASA)의 화성 샘플 귀환 계획은 현재 불확실성이 커지고 있다. 이에 따라 중국이 미국보다 먼저 화성 샘플을 지구로 가져오는 데 성공할 경우 우주 탐사 분야에서 중요한 이정표를 세울 가능성이 있다는 전망이 나온다.
NASA 에임스 연구센터 소장을 역임한 전 화성 탐사 책임자 스콧 허버트는 톈원 3호의 진행 상황에 대해 “만약 이 정보가 정확하다면, 이는 과거 소련이 미국보다 먼저 최초의 인공위성 스푸트니크를 발사했던 순간에 비견될 만한 사건”이라고 평가했다.
그는 이어 “중국은 헤드라인을 장식하는 데 그치지 않고 다른 행성에서 생명체의 증거를 최초로 발견할 수도 있다”고 밝혔다.
